Finding Your Word Of The Year

Finding Your

“New year, new me” right? Isn’t that what everyone always says? I gave up on New Year’s Resolutions years ago. They were always made halfheartedly, too general to be inspiring, and there just wasn’t enough push for me to actually follow through on it during the year. After a few years of, well, nothing, I stumbled into the world of focus words. A word of the year (or focus word) is just like it sounds – one word that you focus on for an entire year. It’s a word that represents an area of change that you want to achieve by the end of the 365 day(ish) period. You make changes in your life and within yourself to grow according to that word. They’re a lot more effective than resolutions (in my experience) because you are only zoning in on one overall change per year. I never really believed in […]

My 2018 Focus Word

My 2018 Focus Word-1

I love, love, love focus words. I could talk forever about the why behind each of mine, hearing the story about someone else’s journey, sharing progress stories, I just love everything about them. My first foray into the world of focus words was actually completely unintentional. I didn’t choose my word of the year per say (because, at that time, I thought they were stupid and useless), but it found me. My first word came to me around February after starting out 2017 full of tension, anger, and frustration. I knew something in me had to change, and the epiphany ( 😉 ) came in the message: I need to choose joy. I’ve already talked a lot about this (read the debut post here and my 6-month update here), so I won’t tell my whole story for the thousandth time (you’re welcome). Instead, let’s get to what this post is […]

End-Of-Year Reflection

End-Of-Year Reflection-1

If I learned anything this year, I learned the life-changing power of being able to reflect introspectively. I do self-reflection daily – sometimes through one or two passing thoughts on my way to class, other times much deeper looks into myself over a weekend. Being honest with yourself is so, so important and if you’ve never realllyyy tried looking within, I highly recommend you make self-reflection a goal of yours for 2018! It’s not always easy, but, at least I’ve found, it can just take one in-your-face kind of book/lecture/article/quote to help you remove you from yourself and really think about why and what you are thinking and feeling. You will become a better, happier, healthier person and you will have this super power that will completely change how you go through life. Today, I’m compiling – and answering – some of my favorite end-of-year self-reflection questions. They can be […]

Reflecting On The Christmas Attitude

Reflecting On The Christmas Attitude-1

I’ve struggled with this post. Naturally, I’m supposed to give you a holiday post. What kind of blogger would I be if I deprived you of that? 😉 But I also found myself going back and forth as to what I actually wanted to say. If you’ve talked to me in recent years, you know I am not about Christmas (read last year’s story on that here). Really, I just can’t seem to enjoy it like I used to. But I didn’t want to go on yet another rant about the holidays (y’all deserve better than that). This post has evolved so many times over the past 2 weeks, from “The Problem With Our Gift-Giving Culture” to “Redefining Our Holiday Season.” I even went so far as to title it “Fighting Christmas,” but then I had to draw the line on myself. What am I doing? Who am I to […]

To The Zombie You Become During Final Exam Season

To The Zombie You Become During Final Exam Season-1

Welcome to finals season! I know, I know- you’re exhausted, you’re stressed, you’re burned out, you’re hungry but you don’t have even ten minutes eat (spoiler: you do), you haven’t seen the sun in four days, and you look and feel like a zombie. Well, all I have to say is get over yourself. Yep, go ahead and read that again. Are you good and mad at me? Perfect. And I lied, I do have more to say. Let’s get into it, shall we?   This is a post about final exam season and, as I do every semester in one form or another, I’m about to air everything that you, as a finals-induced zombie, are doing wrong. If you don’t sleep, you’re doing finals wrong. If you don’t eat, you’re doing finals wrong. If you never leave the library, you’re doing finals wrong. If you don’t shower, you’re doing […]

Why I Write

Why I Write

I’ve been running this blog for over a year now (and just recently hit 100 posts!) and it’s been so nice to have a platform to write. I wrote poetry from elementary up through high school, had a fiction/novel phase that peaked in middle school, and obviously now have moved to blogging. I’ve been writing ever since I knew how and have tried my hand at a little bit of everything. For me, writing has always been enjoyable. I loved class essays because it was something I was good at, but I would also write more “fun” things at lunch, in between classes, free time at home, on the bus, pretty much everywhere I could. I kind of fell out of writing during the transition from high school to college, only to realize how much I missed it after starting this blog soon after. And now here we are! Writing […]

7 MORE Unconventional Things To Be Thankful For

MORE Things to Be Thankful For

Happy Thanksgiving! When I was *a lot* younger, I had a very negative attitude. It got to the point where, every single time I uttered a complaint, my parents would make me stop wherever we were and list 3 things I was grateful for. Annoyed and trying to outsmart the system, I would just list the cliches – family, food, a house, etc. As you can expect, my parents became unsatisfied with that very quickly and would make me go deeper with my responses. Flash forward to almost a year ago today, where I posted the original 7 Unconventional Things To Be Thankful For. A few months later, I embarked on my own gratitude journey and it has completely changed how I see the world (read the story here). Although it’s always great to show thanks for the typical things (family, friends, faith, pizza, etc), it’s just as important to […]

100 Random Facts About Me | 100th Post!

100 Random Facts About Me!-1

Welcome to another milestone! This is the 100th post on Sweet Tea Epiphany! I’ve been blogging for over a year now and I absolutely love it. It’s a lot more work than I expected going in, but it’s also a ton of fun! I don’t know how I was ever able to come up with 100 posts to write without ever running out topics, but I still have pages and pages of ideas just waiting to be written so we’re not going anywhere any time soon 😉 You know that time I wrote 1200 words about what I do every day? Well. In honor of my 100th blog post, today I’m sharing 100 fun facts you didn’t know you didn’t want to know about me 😉 I’ve been working on this list for a few months now, but I had so much writing it and am so excited to finally […]

Every Second Matters

Every Second Matters

Earlier this week, I had the opportunity to attend the first Every Second Matters Distracted Driving Symposium sponsored by the Travelers Institute, Independent Insurance Agents of North Carolina, NC Vision Zero, Road to Zero, and the National Safety Council. The Every Second Matters initiative is a national educational campaign launched this year by the Travelers Institute with the goal of reducing distracted driving and empowering all drivers to set positive examples for one another. I am very passionate about advocating for roadway safety, especially after a few good friends of mine were in some serious car accidents, seemingly one right after the other. It’s an issue that affects all people, regardless of whether they drive or not. At the beginning of the program, we were asked to raise our hand if we knew someone who had been affected by distracted driving. Every single hand in the room went up. I […]

For The Love Of Love

For The Love Of Love

Love is the most powerful thing. It’s encompassed in so much positivity, trust, and kindness that you can find it behind almost anything. Love is what will change the world so, for the love of love, fall in love with everything about this beautiful life we live! *p.s. Let’s see how many times I can use the word “love” in a sentence 😉   Fall in love with the sun. via I’m always partial to the sun, since I’m so obsessed with mornings. It represents new beginnings and brings brightness to our world (literally). The sun is the most beautiful when most of its audience is still asleep, but yet it recognizes its own beauty and shines with all it has anyway. You can learn so much from the rise of the sun and you can learn so much about yourself by spending that early dawn together, just you and […]
