Stop Apologizing

Stop Apologizing

“Some days, I am more wolf than woman and I am still learning how to stop apologising for my wild.” – Nikita Gill   I never realized how often I say “I’m sorry” until a text conversation I had this week showed me, plain as day, just how bad it’s gotten. For five exchanges in a row, I said “sorry” in every single one. I hadn’t done anything wrong. There wasn’t any issue or argument. A “sorry” was not needed nor was it expected from me. It was a normal conversation between two people, yet I was apologizing for literally everything I was saying. Why? Why must we feel the need to apologize for existing? Why do we feel the need to justify who we are as people? Why are we so self-conscious about what we say before, during, and after we say it that every statement we utter includes […]

So You Think You Don’t Have Time?

So You Think You Don't Have Time_

I saw the following video on Facebook a little while ago and it’s been weighing on my mind ever since. Go on, take the three minutes and watch it all the way through. I’ll just wait right here…     Powerful message right? In living out my 2017 focus word, joy, I’ve been working on being more in tune with my happiness. I make time for gratitude and I make a conscious effort to maintain a constructive mindset. What I don’t think I realized until recently, though, was how vital time is in all of that. Time (and how you spend yours) is such a big player in the secret to real contentment. That being said, let me introduce a related quote that is truly changing how I think about (and act on) things these days:   You have time for anything. You have time to pour your heart into […]

A Day In The Life | Summer 2017

A Day In The Life-1

Some of my favorite blog posts to read are simply about what people do every day. People fascinate me and I will gladly spend an hour reading how someone spends the same 24 hours we all get (I won’t make you do that, don’t worry). I think it’s so fun to get to know the person behind the keyboard through the combination of blogs, Instas, videos, etc. It’s amazing how we can form these connections with people we never would have met otherwise! I’ve always wanted to write a “day in the life” post and I’m actually in a pretty solid routine this summer, so get ready for everything you didn’t want to know about how I spend my typical day ๐Ÿ˜‰   5:30 – 5:45 AM – Alarm Beeps (and Beeps. and Beeps.) I usually set three alarms – two at 5:30 and 5:40 on my phone and a […]

Mid-Year Check-In | Finding Happiness

Mid-Year Check-In

You guys, life is good. My (completely unplanned) focus word for 2017 is joy, but the year certainly didn’t start out that way. I didn’t make a new year’s resolution. I had never done focus words before and, frankly, I didn’t really understand them. I didn’t set out to start any new hobbies or change something about myself or anything (other than starting a gratitude journal, read that story here). But, life had other ideas for me. About a month into the new year, I had an epiphany ( ๐Ÿ˜‰ ). I had spent the first few weeks of semester (so early to mid-January) in a constant state of anger and annoyance. I had zero patience, was tense all of the time, wasn’t sleeping, and could have been set off by any little thing. I’m still not entirely sure why I was like that, but it was not a good […]

Your New Zero-Effort Breakfast

Your New Zero-Effort Breakfast

I have to get up for work at 5:30 every morning and, though I’m a self-proclaimed morning person, I like my morning routine to be as easy as possible. Since I’m a mess in the kitchen (especially when I’m half-asleep and running late), I was so excited to try out this recipe for make-ahead fruit and yogurt parfaits from Iowa Girl Eats! These easy parfaits have 4 base ingredients, but a ton of options to make it your own. They’ve made my mornings so much smoother and breakfast is super quick and painless, not to mention yummy! So, today I’m sharing her recipe as well as some different ideas for how to make it your own.     Find the full, original recipe with pictures and measurements on IGE here!   Why? Not only are these parfaits super easy to put together (duh), but all you need to do in […]

In Seven Words

In Seven Words

Yesterday was the first day of my online class for the summer. Assignment number one was to make a forum post introducing ourselves. Apparently there’s no such thing as escaping the dreaded ice breakers, even in a virtual class. Yay school ๐Ÿ˜‰ Anyway, it seemed easy- you know, the basic name/year/major spiel that is the tried and true go-to for every omg-I-just-met-you-what-do-we-talk-about conversation with someone new in college. To take it one step further, we also had to include a description of ourselves using only seven words. Sounds simple, right? Well. As is my nature, I completely panicked and overthought every single one of those seven words, but hey, it got me thinking. There’s so much background to any one word we could pick to describe ourselves: so much context, depth, perceptions, experiences, subconscious, relationships, interests, jobs, dreams… you get the idea. All of those came into play to make […]

A Look Into The Anxious Mind

A Look Into The Anxious Mind

Anxiety takes on so many different forms that it can be hard to fit into one box. Some people have more “extreme” experiences than others, but you can’t compare your struggles to someone else’s and make your own invalid. Nothing about you is invalid. I know that can be hard to convince yourself is true; I struggle with it myself even though I blog about it quite frequently. Below I have more or less a surface look into one aspect of my own anxiety that surrounds my relationships with the people in my life. As I mention, some days it gets worse and some days it gets better, but if you can understand why I apologize all the time or why I try to shrink back as much as possible or why the smallest of things make my day, then you will have a much better understanding of me and […]

The Intangibles I’m Loving

The Intangibles I'm Loving

I’ve mentioned my 2017 focus word a lot, especially regarding how much more positive my life has been as a result of completely throwing myself behind it. Making that decision was one of the best things I could have done for myself personally and it’s led me to appreciate so much more. I’ll take an experience, connection, or time over a material thing any day. It seems I’m always drawn to what’s hard to put into words, so we’ll see how this list of intangibles goes! Keep reading for some of my favorite intangible (or close enough to intangible) things in life right now! via Bright Mornings I love being up in the morning (as I’m sure you’ve gathered by now), especially when the sky is clear, the sun is rising, and you can just tell it’s going to be a great day. Yeah, sometimes it’s chilly, sometimes I’m running […]

Stop Ignoring Your Worth

Stop Ignoring Your Worth-1

You clicked through to this post today for a reason. Maybe it’s because you want a little pep talk. Maybe it’s because you want to read my story of how I realized that I actually matter so you can find that for yourself. Maybe you’re just one of my friends trying to procrastinate on your homework (love you!). Or, maybe, you want an opportunity to tell me none of this applies to you. You still can’t see your own value so you think “Oh yeah? Don’t tell me what to do. You don’t know me” and go to work on your three page rebuttal as to why I’m wrong. Spoiler: I’m not ๐Ÿ˜‰ This stubborn self-doubt can be, believe it or not, a form of entitlement which I recently read about inย Mark Manson’s new book. According to Manson, “…construing everything in life so as to make yourself out to be […]

13 Quotes That Prove Morning Is The Best Time Of Day

13 Quotes That Prove Morning Is The Best Time Of Day

You guys, I absolutely love mornings. I love everything about them, especially how, even if you’ve stayed up a little too late the night before, you just can’t help but step back and appreciate how incredible this world is. Mornings are quiet and calm. They’re still. They always have this special haze settled about them that makes you feel like you’re living a dream. There’s nothing like sitting outside (or by the window in the winter) with a cup of coffee and watching the sun rise or campus slowly come to life. This weekend was so beautiful and I consider myself lucky in that I was able to get up with the sun and experience all it had to offer. I spent the weekend in such a state of appreciation that I just had to share it with you! With the morning sun comes renewal and peace. It brings hope […]
